Why is there a huge spike when the sensor starts?

This is the sensor calibrating as it begins to detect your blood glucose.

When a new sensor is applied, your blood glucose readings may seem to shoot up at first. The sensor needs around half an hour to calibrate, and will then settle and start giving accurate readings.
