This is a natural response to a demand for energy, in this case, getting out of bed.
This is the body’s natural response to a demand for energy. Cortisol and adrenaline increase as you wake up, to get you ready to start your day, and this triggers the release of glucose.
The ability to generate glucose evolved from the need to respond quickly during the night - if our prehistoric ancestors woke up to find a predator in their cave, they would need to wake up and act very quickly.
We respond to being woken suddenly in the same way, with the fight-or-flight stress response, even if we’re woken by an alarm clock rather than a hungry bear!
